Greater Vancouver, BC Tourism Guide with hotels, events and attraction in the historic city of New Westminster.
Explore 12th Street
12th Street has long been a community of its own, one that grew along this early road connection where a streetcar line once ran. Today, ‘eclectic’ is the word to describe New Westminster’s 12th Street neighbourhood. With wide sidewalks and quaint, eco-friendly street lamps this is a walkable community sprinkled with ethnic eateries and second-hand shops.
At the corner of 12th Street and 10th Avenue you’ll find a darling children's boutique named Kiss a Frog (948 12th St.). For years the shop has been one of New Westminster's best kept secrets offering a wide variety of new and gently used clothing for newborns up to elementary age. The unique handmade cribs, furniture and ever-changing inventory will keep you coming back for more.
Down the block you'll discover the city's longest running Comic Shop (932 12th Street). Collectors travel from far and wide to peruse the shop's extensive selection of posters, first editions and memorabilia and to tap owner Tony’s expertise.
A short walk down the street you’ll find Ole Ole Restaurant (831 12th Street) an award-winning Mexican eatery. Enjoy steak rancheros, enchiladas and more, all complete with huge helpings of rice, refried beans, chips and fresh-cut salsa. Neighbouring Neil Douglas Guitar Shop (829 12th Street) is a historic goldmine for guitar connoisseurs.
Enjoy a delectable mocha or a cup of Farmer’s First Fairly Traded Coffee at Village Coffee Lounge (705 12th Street). Complete your adventure with a brew and bowling at the Thirsty Duck and Lucky Strike Lanes, both New Westminster fixtures located at the corner of 12th Street and 6th Avenue.
In the coming year the face of 12th Street will continue to transform. Soon the neigbourhood will be lined with community banners while new retailers continue to move in: all a part of growing community spirit at work in New Westminster’s west end.
Just off the beaten path:
Want to make a splash? A new state-of-the-art outdoor pool is taking up residence in New Westminster's Moody Park summer 2009. Enjoy a relaxing swim in one of the three full 25m swimming lanes, take a dive off the springboard or try your turn on the water slide. It's the perfect location for a summer break.
