Parks & Gardens

In addition to 48 community parks, New Westminster offers inviting walking trails, exciting leisure activities and state-of-the-art recreation facilities. Take a nature walk through Hume Park, or a peaceful stroll through the gardens and tranquil ponds of Friendship Gardens. Glenbrook Ravine Park, on the old BC Penitentiary site, offers 12 acres of natural ravine setting with trails leading to a small meadow. Queen's Park

New Westminster's flagship park (constructed in 1886) is a 75 acre haven for outdoor enthusiasts and families.

Rainbow Playland: "Rainbow Playland" is the family play area in Queen's Park, featuring a petting farm, spray park and TREATS concession.

Children's Petting Farm at Rainbow Playland: The Farm is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from the May long weekend to the September long weekend.

The Summer Sunday Revue: Visit the outdoor bandshell at Queen's Park at 2 p.m. each Sunday during the summer months, to enjoy free performances by a variety of bands, dancers and singers.

Rose Garden: Before you leave, be sure to stop and smell the over 800 roses at the beautifully restored 19th Century Rose Garden.

Friendship Gardens

Located next to City Hall, this beautiful Community Park offers the visitor a waterfall and pond, a majestic totem pole, walking paths and benches to relax and enjoy the many trees and flowers.

Friendship Gardens is the perfect setting for relaxing walks or photographs. Designed by Mr. Gordon Sales, the late Parks Director, the Gardens were built in 1963 as a tribute to our Sister City of Moriguchi, Japan.

The creation is a blend of the basic Japanese garden and our own informal garden tastes..

Hume Park

With an outdoor pool, soccer fields, a lacrosse box and baseball diamonds, Hume Park is a haven for outdoor sports enthusiasts. The park also features trails and greenways and an off-leash dog park sure to please four-legged travelers.

Glenbrook Ravine

Glenbrook Ravine is a perfect place to stroll and view the beauty of ponds, waterfalls, wildflowers, ferns and natural vegetation.

Sapperton Landing Park

Sapperton Landing is a beautiful linear waterfront park boasting beautiful views of the Fraser River. Along the scenic walk you will be delighted with the abundance of natural vegetation and wildlife.

Park access is at the foot of Cumberland Street and East Columbia Street

Grimston Park

Grimston Park is the perfect place to have a picnic or take in a game of lacrosse. With a wading pool and adventure playground, it's also the perfect place for younger family members to enjoy the great outdoors.

Ryall Park

Another family favourite, this park boasts Megan's Place playground and a spray park for cooling off the kiddies.

Terry Hughes Park

This ten acre facitlity is a premier athletic destination for softball, basketball and soccer.

Sapperton Park

Boasting a fun and colourful playground, this five acre park has been serving the community and visitors alike for almost one hundred years!

711 Bicycle Path / John Molson Way

These pathways stretch from New Westminster all the way to Vancouver, and follow the route of the SkyTrain, so you can walk as far as you like, then hop the SkyTrain for the return trip.

Waterfront Esplanade

The Waterfront Esplanade and park area was developed around a marine theme. Enjoy a stroll along the Fraser and admire heritage monuments that explain the City's history and give the area a quaint feel. Flower beds and creative landscaping help to meet the separate needs of bikers and pedestrians.
