Angie au Hemphill, a member of the Federation of Canadian artists is excited about her latest involvement with the annual New Westminster Culture Crawl, happening throughout the Royal City on August 13 and 14. In a recent discussion with this extremely busy artist, we asked about this year’s event and her history with the crawl.
How long have you been involved with the NW Culture Crawl?
I’ve been working with Trudy van Dop (the organizer of the Culture Crawl) for a while now. She is always supportive of local artists and asked me to be involved for about four years ago. Even though my studio is big, it is always full of stuff, so Trudy said I could paint in her gallery. I also try to paint in her beautiful garden, but have to move inside when it’s raining. The last three years lots of people have come and seemed interested in watching me paint.
What do you hope to achieve with this year’s crawl?
To show what I’ve been painting recently. I have about 20 to 30 oils and acrylics – a collection of work from my Trip to Europe: Italy, France and England. But I still have many images from that trip to paint – not only from Europe, but also from the West Coast. I have another show coming up in August – “Street side to Countryside” -- so I h
ope that people will come out and see what the artists in their community are doing. It is nice that the City of New Westminster still has sponsorship and an interest in showing art work in this city, but support from the residents is always welcomed. Does involvement in the Crawl help you with your work – creatively or financially?
Yes, in both areas. If they go to the van Dop Gallery, where my work is usually on show, they might remember it and come back to buy later. Sales don’t often happen during the Culture Crawl, but if they are interested, the viewers will often call you later to buy a painting. It’s a good way to communicate with our audience and it’s the best way to educate the public.
Au Hemphill paints mainly in acrylics, although she does work in oils and water colours. She has done extensive work painting portraits of the heritage homes around New Westminster and recentlywon an award from the Heritage Builders for her work.
Her motivation to paint is quite clear to her. “Living in beautiful BC with all the trees and landscape and the heritage homes – just being a part of it, how can you not paint it?”
